Pipes are technically round-long hollow cylinders helpful for transferring liquid or gaseous fluids from one pipe to another. On the other hand, tubes are long-hollow rods suitable for carrying out structural applications like supporting machinery parts, automobile parts, shipping materials, etc.

Monel 400 is a nickel-copper in which 67% nickel and 23% copper are in formation. The nickel-copper-formed elements provide resistance to seawater and high-temperature streams. However, nickel alloy is resistant to Hydrochloric and Hydrofluoric Acids when they are de-aerated.

The alloy 400 safeguards the product from corrosion, brackish water, and seawater. It adds factors to characterize with good strength and weldability. Rather than nickel and copper, there are a few additional elements, including manganese, silicon, and iron, making it strong enough to work in elevated temperature areas and fight corrosion.

  • Dimensions

Inner diameter defines the liquid capacity and strength of the pipe and tubes, respectively. For pipes, the outer diameter minus two times the wall thickness will determine the inner diameter. Whereas tubes have classified schedules with prescribed measurements for outer diameters and thickness.

  • Usages

Pipes are generally helpful in highly efficient and automated processing houses like gas stations, processing mills, chemical processing industries, etc. On the other hand, tubes are beneficial to support machinery or instrumental appliances within the factory premises.

  1. Connecting Methods

Joining pipes is labor-intensive. We can connect them using soldering, welding, or forging methods. Whereas tubes have threaded or grooved ends, making it easy to join them using coupling or brazing methods.

  • Monel 400 holds 67% nickel which helps in providing resistance to the metal from high corrosions. Thus, providing these pipes and tubes to maintain strength in elevated temperature areas.
  • Monel 400 provides good resistance to hydrofluoric and hydrochloric acids. It helps the pipes and tubes to withstand stress and pressure in alkaline solution environments. 
  • Monel 400 exhibits excellent mechanical properties from subzero temperatures up to 480 degrees celsius. Thus, enabling these pipes and tubes to attain high-yield tensile strength in elevated temperature areas.
  • Monel 400 offers about the same corrosion resistance as nickel but with higher maximum working pressures and temperatures and at a lower cost due to its superior ability to be machined.
  • However, Monel 400 cannot resist nitric oxide, nitrous acid, or hypochlorites. Thus, we should not use the pipes and tubes of its coatings in the environments where these elements are present.
